Steelers War Board

Here are my CB rankings.  The only player I pulled from the board was Janoris Jenkins for obvious reasons. 

2012 NFL Draft Prospect Rankings – CB

1. Morris Claiborne, LSU, 5’11”, 188 lbs – Fantastic athlete who is out of our reach but I’ve learned to never leave a guy off just because I think he’ll be off the board before we pick.
2. Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama, 6’1”, 186 lbs – I love what this kid brings to the table.  He’s not the best cover guy in the draft, but his physical tools and ability to play well in both man and zone make him a great fit.
3. Stephon Gilmore, S Car, 6’0”, 190 lbs – Raw but very talented.  Has everything you look for in a CB.
4. Josh Robinson, Central Florida, 5’10”, 199 lbs – Just call me Al Davis because I love a CB with speed and man skills and this kid has both!  Again, pretty raw but he won’t get out of the 2nd round.
5. Trumaine Johnson, Montana, 6’2”, 204 – This kid is BIG!  Might project better to Safety and probably isn’t worth this ranking as a CB alone, but as a DB in general, I think he is very worth this ranking.
6. Alfonzo Dennard, Nebraska, 5’10”, 204 – This kid is an ideal zone CB with some man skills.  He fits the Steelers mold.
7. Chase Minnifield, Virginia, 5’10”, 183 – He is recovering from a knee injury so his stock is falling, but he is a perfect fit for the Steelers.  Very good in both man and zone schemes, physical and intelligent with a good pedigree.
8. Brandon Boykin, Georgia, 5’9”, 182 – Love him or hate him, the kid makes some plays.  He misses some plays too, though, and that needs to be corrected.  He’s also a dynamic return man and the Steelers could use a kid like that with A. Brown now a starter on offense.
9. Casey Hayward, Vandy, 5’11”, 185 – A bit of a sleeper.  He has good size, okay speed, and good ball skills.  A zone guy to me, but worth a look in the late 3rd or 4th round.
10. Jamell Fleming, Oklahoma, 5’10”, 206 – Another raw prospect whose size and speed combination makes him interesting.  Had a good combine, but the tape is lacking.
11. Dwight Bentley, Louisiana-Laf, 5’10”, 182 – From Ike’s school, this kid doesn’t have the size that Ike has, but he has great speed and a great attitude.  He fights for the ball and is aggressive with the receiver.
12. Josh Norman, Coastal Carolina, 6’0”, 197 – Had a great East-West Shrine game and was a solid player his entire career.  Very good on special teams as well and could contribute right away in that capacity.
13. Coty Sensabaugh, Clemson, 5’11”, 189 – I really like this kid and could easily be convinced to rate him higher.  He’s not expected to be drafted before the 5th round, but has starter potential written all over him.  Not exactly what you look for from a body type standpoint, but has all the physical tools.
14. Jayron Hosley, Virginia Tech, 5’10”, 178 – Some people have this kid rated very high, even as a late 1st or early 2nd round pick.  I just don’t see it.  He’s a talented kid, but will likely need a couple of years to bulk up and learn to play in the NFL.  Worth a mid-round pick, but not first or second day.
15. Leonard Johnson, Iowa St, 5’8”, 196 – Short and slow doesn’t usually get you drafted too early, but Johnson is faster than his combine time and plays hard. 
16. DeQuan Menzies, Alabama, 5’10”, 202 – Ran better at his Pro Day than at the combine and was impressive during the season even though teams were throwing in his direction to stay away from Dre Kirkpatrick.  I like him as a zone guy, but he plays man coverage well too.
17. Shaun Prater, Iowa, 5’10”, 190 – A perfect zone coverage CB with better than advertised speed and hips.
18. Coryell Judie, Texas A&M, 6’0”, 194 – Its around this point that I start looking more for physical ability than production.  Judie had a tough senior season with injuries and below average play, but has everything you look for in a prospect.  Great size, speed and a pretty good junior season make him an interesting prospect in the middle to late rounds.
19. Justin Bethel, Presbyterian, 5’11”, 200 – Small school kid that I like more than most, I think.  He’s a bit stiff, but I love his potential, size and speed.
20. Ryan Steed, Furman, 5’10”, 195 – Steed had a bad combine, but his tape is strong and he held his own at the Senior Bowl.  Has starter potential with some time to develop.
21. Omar Bolden, AZ St., 5’10”, 202 – Significant injury issues with two major knee injuries during his college career, but he has first round ability when healthy.  Didn’t run at the combine but if he’s given a clean bill of health would be worth a late round pick.
22. Asa Jackson, Cal Poly, 5’10”, 191 – Another project kid with great speed.  Probably more of a Nickel, but with Big Play Willie Gay leaving via FA, we could use some help in the slot.
23. Donnie Fletcher, Boston College, 6’1”, 195 – At 6’1” and running a 4.5 40, he’s worth a look.  Another kid who might be better at Safety than CB, but this team could use some depth in that area as well.
24. Chris Greenwood, Albion, 6’1”, 194 – Talk about a small school prospect!  Division III Albion is not a hotbed of NFL prospects, but this kid is exciting as a late round prospect.  He ran a reported 4.34 40 at the Michigan Pro Day at over 6’1”.
25. Ron Brooks, L.S.U., 5’10”, 190 – Another speedy prospect that wasn’t even a starter at LSU, but has the physical tools to develop into a pretty good football player.
26. Keith Tandy, CB, West Virginia, 5'10", 199 lbs. - Well built corner with only average height.  Hits like a LB and is a great tackler on special teams.  Has trouble locating the ball and can give up big plays because of it.  Nice hips and fluidity, but gets caught out of position regularly.  The physical tools are all there and maybe he can be coached up on his coverage skills.  His physicality and special teams ability makes him an option in the later rounds.

Not a great Safety class at all, Baron is the best safety of the class but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he dropped to the beginning of the second round, too much talent at other positions that rank ahead of safety. I was high on Iloka at first but after watching tape and also seeing that he has tight hips and will probably get burned by people like wallace that have straight line speed or get frozen with double moves. The safety I think best fits our defence is Antonio Allen, Supports he run real well, has better feet than most people think.

2012 Running Backs

Halfbacks

Trent Richardson - prototypical NFL RB - long gone by 24.

Lamar Miller - second best RB in the draft. Grood inside runner with breakaway speed. Didn't catch many balls in college.

Doug Martin - Jack of all trades, master of none? Like everything he brings to the table but not sure he can handle the workload. This guy is put together!!

Isaiah Pead - Home run hitter, good effort at all times. Doesn't break many tackles but is elusive enough to make guys miss. Broke Archie Griffins' high school rushing records.

David Wilson - Boom or bust RB. Insane amount of raw ability but maturity and ball control issues. Liability in pass pro and runs east/west.

Robert Turbin - Nice looking prospect with great size. Questionable competition ... the next James Starks? ACL Injury 2010.

Cyrus Gray - Another nice looking prospect. Only a RB for a couple of seasons (started as QB). High character guy on the upswing. I'd jump on him in the 4th.

LaMichael James - Everything you want in a RB except for the small frame. Could fit nicely in the WCO.

Bernard Pierce - Limited athletically but runs hard. Very little experience in passing game. Injury concerns.

Chris Polk - Bombed at the Senior Bowl. No thanks.

Chris Rainey - Think Daren Sproles / Dexter McCluster / Percy Harvin. Incredible athlete, can take it to the house from anywhere on the field. Luxury pick.

Ronnie Hillman - Another smaller back with home run ability. Still hasn't tapped his potential yet - very raw.

Brandon Bolden - Boom or bust athlete with NFL talent. Inconsistent performer at the college level. Will the light turn on?

Dan Herron - Runs hard but won't break many tackles. Liability in pass pro.

Vick Ballard - Down hill runner with average athletic ability. Won't make too many people miss. Problems with ball security.

Terrance Ganaway - Good north / south runner that takes a while to get to top speed. Issues in pass pro at Senior Bowl.

Davin Meggett - Watched this kid at Maryland and kept waiting for him to break out - never happened. Won't happen in the NFL either.

Marc Tyler - Injury waiting to happen.

Tauren Poole - Very limited athletically.

Fullbacks

Emil Igwenagu - Classic bowling ball build with good athletic ability. Likes contact and is still learning the FB position. Good hands.

Chad Diehl - If you just want a blocker, Diehl is your guy. Best pure FB in the draft but offers little else.
